What does freedom cost and who pays the price?
“True freedom is to share all the chains our brothers wear” – James Russell Lowell. In this year, 2012, is there any doubt that life as we know it is not freedom for all? Being a descendant of slaves, who lived in fear daily but feared freedom more, these statements hold truths that are often not spoken in our society today. It is easier to discuss politics, religion, education and same sex marriage, than to get a clear definition or understanding of freedom.
Freedom, true freedom, means to be uncontrolled, being at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. Mental, physical and emotional entrapment with or without visual restraints can also hold one captive. What are the keys to freedom? Who holds them and how does one who seeks to be free attain them?
