Dual-Diagnostic Fate: Why African-Americans are Dying 25 Years Younger

This study takes a look at why African-Americans are dying younger from a systemic perspective and investigates the moral vs personal responsibility on the prevention and treatment of comorbiditiy amongst AAs. When we take a look at the numbers of AAs living with a serious medical condition and a mental health diagnosis, we find that a large proportionate amount of AAs are dying 25 years younger. Who are we to blame: the system (backed by a billion dollar healthcare industry) or the individual (who sees him/herself as a victim and product of their environment). Somewhere down the line, someone has to take the blame. While poor eating habits (i.e. McDonald's) is a personal choice for many well-to-do families, it is a forced choice for many AAs who think they can't afford to eat healthy.
